Also located on-site at FISC is a branch of the EVOLVE Academy of Mixed Martial Arts. Led by Mike Moses, EVOLVE Academy instructs both adults and children in a unique blend of traditional and contemporary martial arts, including Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Primal Skills Fitness and Personal Defense Systems.
Where most Martial Arts schools instruct in either stand-up or ground techniques, EVOLVE Academy offers both. The combination of these two areas of focus has made EVOLVE’s approach one of the most effective and functional methods of martial arts training in the country. Programs promote personal self-defense and the non-violent conflict resolution, thus improving self-confidence and developing leadership skills which can be carried over into all aspects of its students’ lives. What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) is a “gentle art” that utilizes the skill of controlling an opponent in order to gain a dominant position. Because control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is centered around taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for control positions from where the opponent can be submitted.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger person. Without relying on strength or weapons, a person can control, defeat and escape from a larger opponent.
The BJJ practitioner wears a gi, or Kimono. The required uniform offers the participant, as well as their opponent, the opportunity to control through the use of the collar, sleeve or other part of the gi. The gi can be used to set up throws, takedowns, chokes and joint locks.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a demanding workout both mentally and physically. On one hand, BJJ is a sport that requires the participant to calculate and plan each move, not unlike a game of Chess. On the other, it offers an outstanding way to develop, strengthen and condition every area of your physical body.
What is Personal Defense Systems?
Personal Defense System ( PDS) is designed to give students a challenging workout including cardiovascular and strength building techniques while utilizing the skills and techniques used by mixed martial artists. Referred to as “Mixed Martial Arts for the Street”, the PDS Program incorporates 7 areas of focus:
1. Upper body strikes.
2. Defense to upper body strikes.
3. Lower body strikes.
4. Defense to lower body strikes.
5. Self-Defense Grappling
6. Street Application
7. Weapons
Most Martial Arts systems teach and train in a traditional way that has been carried on throughout the centuries. A lot of the Hollywood-style punches and kicks will never work in a real-life situation. This is great if a student wants to carry on the art as a tradition or wants to compete in a tournament or controlled environment; however it becomes useless in a real life situation. PDS trains students for all areas of a real confrontation, making it the most functional martial arts system available!
